Wines of Germany: Sekt

When it comes to celebrating summer and German wine, it’s impossible to do so without a bubbly glass of Sekt. Just like Italy has Prosecco and Spain has Cava, Sekt is Germany’s sparkling wine and said to be their best kept secret! Sparkling wine is so popular in Germany that they drink more per capita than any other market in the world, annually consuming about one fifth of the nearly 2 billion bottles of bubbly produced worldwide!

This Fitz-Ritter Durkheimer Hochbenn Riesling Sekt is classified as Sekt b.A, a certification meaning it was made in Germany from grapes grown in one of the country’s 13 main growing regions - in the case of this wine, the Pfalz. While all German grape varieties can be used to make Sekt, Riesling is one of the top grape varieties for Sekt production and its styles can range from extra dry to sweet. The classic flavors of Riesling come alive in this Sekt with flavors of citrus, apple and peach.

The climate in Germany provides excellent conditions for cultivating grapes that make light, fresh wines with high acidity, which are perfect base wines for Sekt.

PAIRING SEKT

The bubbly, bright and fresh wine is easy to pair with food. The effervescences stimulate the palate, making it a welcomed partner for morning brunches of all kinds! The high acidity of this Sekt pairs well with all types of foods, especially those rich in flavor. I suggest trying it with the one of my go-to brunch faves … chicken and waffles! The bubbles are a lovely match for the crispy chicken and fluffy buttery waffles.
